Charles R. Walsh was born ca 1834 in Oswego County, New York. He enlisted at Earlville, IL, in Company I of the 4th Illinois Cavalry on August 22, 1861. He re-enlisted on January 1, 1862, at Cairo, IL, as a Seaman in the Naval Service. On April 4, 1863, he re-enlisted as a Private in Company D of the 12th Illinois Cavalry. He was discharged due to disability on November 1, 1864, at Baton Rouge, LA. On July 29, 1887, he applied for admission to the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Quincy, IL. His admission paperwork states he was 53 years old and a resident of Morris, Grundy County, IL. He was not married and had no children. Nearest relative is listed as Redmond Walsh, brother, of Gunnison, CO. His disability was listed as a gunshot wound in the abdomen. He was admitted July 29, 1887, registered number 432. He received a pension under certificate # 201854, $36.00/month. Charles Walsh was discharged from the Home on March 14, 1890.
