John Fitzgerald was born ca 1846 in Canada. He enlisted at Morris, IL, in Company A of the 58th Illinois Infantry as a Private on June 1, 1862. He was discharged at expiration of term on February 7, 1865, at Chicago, IL. On August 25, 1887, he applied for admission to the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Quincy, IL. His admission paperwork states he was a resident of Minooka, Grundy County, IL. Varicose veins in his right leg and impaired vision were listed as his disabilities for admission. He was admitted September 27, 1887, registered number 530. He was discharged from the Home on Sept 10, 1917. His pension was $8.00/month, certificate # 320553. He was injured in battle between the 1st and 12th of May, 1864 at the Battle of "Pleasant Hill" in Louisiana. He was an engineer and single. His nearest relative was listed as Mrs. Emma Anthony of Joliet IL. James Freckilton of Minooka, Grundy County IL, is listed as beneficiary on his will.
