Thomas J. Gates was born Sep 30, 1842, in Clermont County, Ohio. On January 1, 1864, he enlisted as a Private in Company B of the 37th Illinois Infantry at Morris, IL. He re-enlisted and was transferred to Company C of the 76th Illinois Infantry. He was discharged May 15, 1866, in Houston, TX. He received $10.00 per month on pension certificate number 907,378. The application for pension was filed on June 13, 1894 in Nebraska. On December 5, 1904, Thomas was admitted to the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Quincy, IL, registered number 6973. He was discharged on furlough February 21, 1906, and then re-admitted on September 9, 1908. His discharge occurred on Oct 27, 1908. His admission paperwork lists rheumatism and obesity as his disability. He was 63 years of age, a resident of Morris, not married, and listed one child (Cora Bowman) living, age 36, who was to be notified in the event of his death. On September 9, 1908, Thomas signed a short will for the home leaving his possessions to Lizzie Coyle of Canton, MO.
