Samuel N. Cody was born April 10, 1846 in Lisbon, Kendall County, IL. On September 5, 1864, he enlisted as a Private in Company D of the 146th Illinois Infantry at Springfield, IL. He was discharged July 8, 1865, at Springfield, IL. His pension was $4.00 per month on certificate number 942,286, filed in South Dakota, January 25, 1896, application number 1,173,571. On October 16, 1906, Samuel applied for admission to the Illinois Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Quincy, IL. His admission paperwork lists piles, fistula & heart trouble as his disability. As per his paperwork, he was living in Verona, was married to Nelly Cody of Verona and had two children: Myrtle, 13 years old, and Harry, 7 years old. Approval for admission occurred on October 16, 1906, registered number 7598. He was listed as AWOL on May 12, 1908, after being absent from the Home for ten days.
Samuel Cody, age 64, appears on the 1910 Fall River County, South Dakota, Federal Census, with his wife Mary, age 45, and two children, Myrtle, age 17, and Harry, age 11. Samuel and Mary had been married eight years and it was the second marriage for both.
